Information Power is pleased to announce the publication of a new report on Green Open Access (OA) for long-form publications, commissioned by the British Academy.
The report examines how higher education institution repositories are used for longform OA materials, including monographs, edited collections, and book chapters. Drawing on interviews and surveys with library leaders, quantitative usage data from IRUS-UK and repository managers, sales and usage data from publishers, bibliographic data from Dimensions, and a focus group with humanities and social science academics, this report provides one of the first comprehensive analyses of the deposit, discoverability, and use of longform OA content in UK repositories.
While there is broad support in principle for Green OA for longform outputs, most universities lack a dedicated strategy, and existing policies developed for journal articles are being applied to books unevenly and without clear oversight. Repository infrastructure presents a further obstacle, with the majority of book records containing only metadata rather than full text. The report calls for a national strategic framework, cross-sector coordination, and sustainable funding mechanisms if longform OA is to be ready for inclusion in the next REF cycle.
The report was commissioned by the British Academy.
